Day 1
At 8.30am, depart from your hotel to Batang Ai, following a 275 kilometre route along the Pan Borneo Highway where you will be able to see rural villages, towns, pepper, rubber and rice fields along the highway.
On the way, there will be a few stopovers. The first stopover will be a small town called Serian where you can get refreshments and probably do some last minute shopping for insect repellent since there will be lots of insects in the jungle. You can also do some shopping for the Ibans at the longhouse later on to show hospitality. There will be a native fruit market selling jungle produce such as wild bananas and jungle vegetables. After that, you will continue your journey and stop by a pepper farm to see how the locals harvest and process the famous Sarawak Pepper. The next stop will be a place to observe and study wild orchids and pitcher plants. Your last stop will be another small Chinese town called Lachau. Here you will have your lunch and see how the locals here still practice the barter trade system among themselves.
You will then continue your journey to Batang Ai Lake as you stop at the jetty and take either a ferry or boat across to the Hilton Batang Ai Longhouse. The boat ride will take approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Once you have arrived Batang Ai, you can check in and you will be free to do whatever you like at your own pace and leisure.
Day 2
Breakfast will be served at the restaurant. After that you will depart for your journey through the lake and streams to the native longhouse. Your guide will take you on a tour around the longhouse but before that, the Ibans will greet you with their gongs and traditional Iban war dance or ngajat. You are most welcome to put on the traditional attire and join them and even if you do not understand their language, it will not matter since you will have fun anyway.
The Ibans are people who enjoy drinking so you will most definitely have to try their rice wine or as they call it, tuak. Tuak is made out of rice and is usually categorized as two kinds; the Induk or Mother wine and the Apai or Father wine. The Mother wine will be sweet and tangy because it is made for the women whereas the father wine will be sour and strong, suitable for those who like a kick to their alcohol.
Lunch will then be served at the riverbank and before leaving the longhouse, the natives will give you a demonstration of their blowpipe or sumpit, an ancient weapon dabbed with dart frog poison to hunt large animals such as wild boars. You will then take a longboat ride back to your resort and have a good night’s rest.
Day 3
Breakfast will be served at the restaurant. You will now use the same route back to the city by ferry and road. On the way back to Kuching City you will be able to have lunch at Lachau and at approximately 4.00pm you will reach your hotel.
