Itinerary

Day 1

At 8.30am, meet your guide at the hotel and start your journey with a drive along the Pan Borneo Highway where you will get an amazing view of the scenery. Throughout the whole drive, you will make a few stops and the first stop will be a small town called Serian about 60 kilometres from the city. Here you will see a native market selling fruits and vegetables. The second stop will be another small town called Lachau. It is a Chinese village where the barter trade system is still practiced until today among the natives of Kalimantan, Sarawak and Chinese shopkeepers. Here you will get a chance to buy presents for the Ibans at the longhouse.

You will then arrive at Lubong Subong Jetty and from here you will take a longboat upriver to the Ngemah Ili Longhouse, about 240 kilometres away from Kuching. When you arrive at the longhouse, leave your belongings in the family room and go out to the veranda or ruai for tea and coffee or if you consume alcohol, try the handmade tuak or rice wine which is fermented by the locals. Dinner will be served later in one of the selected family rooms.

After dinner there will be the welcoming ceremony performed by the Ibans. They will start hitting their gongs and perform the traditional warrior and maiden dance or ngajat in full ceremonial regalia.

Spend the night at the longhouse where a mattress, pillow and mosquito net will be provided. (Note: Very basic accommodation)

Day 2

In the morning, have breakfast with the local Iban families in the family room. After breakfast, one of the warriors will demonstrate the blowpipe or sumpit, a powerful ancient weapon used to hunt and kill animals. You will then take a longboat ride upriver to a riverbank where your guide and one of the Ibans will cook your lunch in a traditional way using bamboo, called Pansuh Manuk, a delightful savoury chicken dish.

After lunch, bid adieu to the Ibans and head for another longboat ride downriver to the Lubong Subong Jetty. Transfer to your van and once more, ride along the Pan Borneo Highway back to your hotel in the city.
